1. Order not up to scratch for Marco Historical Museum tile mosaic

    The Marco Island History Museum in Florida was all set to receive a new tile mural but the volunteer workers were dismayed to discover that they had got the wrong tiles.

    George and Carol Engstrom, Alan and Linda Sandlin and Craig Woodward all volunteered to take part in the project yet they could not complete the work until the right tiles had been delivered. This set the project back some time and proved to be very inconvenient.

  2. Maldon mosaic maker reaches final stage of national tiling competition

    Claire Thomson, of Cross Road, Maldon, has reached the final eighteen of a mosaic tiling competition and stands to win her own art commission.

    Although only a novice, Ms. Thompson is very enthusiastic about her tiled artwork and is hoping to progress even further in the competition.

    In fact, she has only just completed a beginner’s course in mosaic tiling; a course that was held by local artist Anne Schwegmann-Fielding.

  3. Strike over for Sri Lankan tile plant

    As of the 13th August workers at a Sri Lankan tile manufacturing plant went on strike because they felt that they had insufficient wages.

    The company in Jalatara, Ranala, had been in negotiations with the Inter Company Employees Union regarding wages since January 2010.

    At that time a company representative said, “No agreement has been arrived at because the unions are not willing to compromise on their demands.

  4. Divers discover Spanish tiles that reveal historic Tudor decorating style

    Blue and white Valencian tiles recently discovered by two divers have been authenticated by experts at the Museum of London as dating back to the late 15th and 16th Century.

    The fragments of Valencian tile are of Spanish origin and were discovered by the divers during the excavation of a Tudor palace in Surrey.

    It appears that the tiles were laid over 400 years ago, while the manor house was receiving renovation work to extend the grounds.

  5. Tiles used as unique way to celebrate local Dover community

    A tile painting event is being organised at the Dover Town Library, in Massachusetts, as way to pay homage to the local area and culture.

    The tiles will be painted by the residents and will then become part of a permanent display for everyone to see.

    The event will help children to express their creative side and provide them with an opportunity to explore the stories of their favourite books.

  6. Tile mural planned for new downtown Canadian Park

    Work on the Estevan downtown park is currently under-way to create an area where local residents can relax and chill-out.

    The project, which was organised by the Estevan Beautification Committee, plans to make a park that has been specifically designed for people to read, enjoy their lunch or simply just take a nap on the lawn.

    The project will use tiles to create a unique mural that will become a park centrepiece for Estevan residents.

  7. Work set to begin on new tiled fountain in Poole

    September 2, 2010

    A date has now been set for the refurbishment of the dolphin fountain in Dorset, with work beginning this winter.

    The gardens of Poole are all set to receive a £13,200 renovation project that will install the new Dolphin fountain, as well as sloping greens and a paved central area with lighting and a seating area.

    The work will begin in the winter so that it is less disruptive for users of the gardens and so that it is ready to be reopened in the spring.

  8. Roof tiles are being replaced as 13th century church receives much needed repair work

    Renovation work has begun on the Church of St Germanus in Rame, Cornwall, after parishioners finally hit their fund raising target.

    Over the last year the church has organised activities and fund raising events and have been able to raise close to £100,000.

    So much was needed because the church is a Grade I listed building and needs specialist builders to carry out the work on the 750 year old church.

  9. Historic fireplace tiles saved from near-destruction in New Jersey

    August 31, 2010

    Just in time to avoid the wrecking ball, a unique tiled fireplace has been saved from destruction at the former Roosevelt School in Cranford, New Jersey.

    The Union County Freeholder Board organized the rescue after it was discovered that the fireplace was inside a building that was set to be demolished in order to make way for a new athletics field.

    Daniel P. Sullivan, Union County Freeholder Chairman, said, “This beautiful artefact could not have been saved without the diligence and dedication of all involved.
